AB OBJECTIVE: Reduced-Glutathione (GSH) is decreased in plasma,
epithelial-lung fluid and T lymphocytes in HIV+ patients. Because this
deficiency may potentiate HIV replication and accelerate disease
progression, we determined the level of this Tripeptide in the liver, to
know if its concentration is correlated either to liver damage, either
to HIV infection. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed 100 US-guided
hepatobiopsies between Jan. 1992 and Jun. 1993 in hepatopathic patients
(56 HIV+, 44 HIV-). GSH concentration was measured in the liver
parenchyma by high performance liquid chromatography and scintillation
spectrometry. RESULTS: Our data show a significative difference (p <
0.01) in GSH level between HIV+ and HIV- patients, not linked to the
score of hepatic failure; this difference is more significative between
these two groups if we link it to drug abuse too. DISCUSSION: We think
that appropriate therapeutic policy should be useful to replace GSH
level in HIV+ patients, especially in drug addict ones because GSH
deficiency could be one of factors influencing immunodeficiency during
HIV infection.
